Periodically throughout the year the Witch House hires for
some or all of the positions described below.
Please call for job availability.
The Witch House seeks friendly and responsible candidates to work as seasonal Visitor Services staff. Visitor Services staff are responsible for Admissions reception, information, and sales activities, and for Gift Shop sales. Visitor Services staff may also be asked to help the Director plan and run public programs. The museum is open seven days a week, and full-day and half-day positions are available. Preference may be given to those with some weekend availability. Qualified candidates should enjoy working with the public, be comfortable working registers and handling money, and have an interest in New England history, architecture, and/or decorative arts. Training is provided. Salary is $8/hour.
The Witch House occasionally seeks candidates to work as seasonal Tour Guides. Guides lead interpretive tours of Salem's only historic house with a direct connection to the witchcraft trials of 1692. Tours include information on 17th century architecture, lifestyles, and Jonathan Corwin’s role in the witch trials. Other responsibilities include admission and gift shop sales, daily care of the museum space and collections, and assisting the Director with public programs and administrative duties. Preference may be given to those with some weekend availability. Qualified candidates should enjoy working with the public, and will either have completed a BA or currently be enrolled in a BA-granting program. Training is provided. Salary is $10/hour.
The Witch House accepts interns for summer, fall, winter, and spring internships. Interns report to the Director and assist in a variety of aspects involved in running a small historic house museum. Areas of focus available include education, collections management, facilities management, publicity and marketing, and gift shop management. Specific projects may include, for example, developing and running educational programs for families, schools, and adult learners; working on visitor accessibility; or researching specific areas of the house’s collection. Interns may also be assigned tasks in the production of "Eerie Evenings at the Witch House", a seasonal theater festival produced by the team behind the critically lauded Eerie Events. "Eerie Evenings at the Witch House" takes place over six nights in October and features storytelling by costumed actors in historic settings. While the house is open to the general public from May through early November, interns will also deliver 1-2 tours of the historic house a day and provide breaks for visitor services staff.
Internship start dates, hours, and duration are flexible. Both full and part time internships are available. A limited number of stipends are available for full time interns. Preference may be given to those with some weekend availability.
Qualifications: Qualified candidates will either have completed a BA or currently be enrolled in a BA-granting program. Interests in American history, art history, architectural history, and/or theater are helpful. All majors will be considered.
