Haunted City is an annual October celebration of the macabre in Salem's history. The successor to the Peabody Essex Museum's discontinued Eerie Events, Haunted City makes use of the 300 year old Witch House, providing a historic and eerie atmosphere. This unique, six-night program features costumed actors performing original monologues in authentic settings. Visitors are entertained and serenaded during the night by musical groups, jugglers and other costumed performers. Visitors will also be able to relax at the café, featuring fall favorites like apple cider donuts.
Three eerie tales, each lasting around ten to fifteen minutes, are performed continuously throughout the evening, in this unique setting in Salem. Visitors may attend as many or as few activities as they wish - typically spending one to three hours at Haunted City. Haunted City tales are inspired by and related to the unique macabre heritage of Salem. Authors as diverse as Nathaniel Hawthorne and H. P. Lovecraft have set their stories in Salem, and used the tragic Witchcraft Trials of 1692 and the spectacle of wealth amassed during the China Trade as lenses through which to examine the darker side of human nature. Haunted City uses the setting made infamous these authors and the events of 1692 to create an eerie experience spanning three centuries and numerous literary and artistic movements.
