    • June 18, 2011 to July 8, 2012
Ripple Effect, in PEM's interactive Art & Nature Center, highlights water as a medium for artistic expression and hands-on exploration. Visitors encounter water in its different states - solid, liquid and gas - as they investigate artworks inspired by rivers, geysers, snowflakes, fog and more. Water's allure to contemporary artists as a creative medium is compelling, especially in relation to the unique, life-giving properties of this substance we so often take for granted.

    • April 14, 2012 to May 27, 2013
This exhibition features photographs made over the last 20 years by renowned Boston artist Barbara Bosworth around her childhood home in Novelty, Ohio, and other locations significant to her family. Featuring the oldest and youngest members of the family, these touching images explore the joy of youth and the wistfulness of aging, the nature of memory and the passage of time. Also included are a selection of natural history specimens handed down in the artist's family. This is Bosworth's major museum debut in New England. The photographs in Natural Histories, Photographs by Barbara Bosworth are among the most successful of Bosworth's career, but most will appear for the first time at PEM.

    • March 22, 2012 to May 27, 2013. Artist Michael Lin spotlights PEM's renowned collection of Asian export art, particularly Mr. Nobody, one of the first representations of a European gentleman in Chinese porcelain. Animating the history of trade between China and the West, Lin creates a large-scale installation composed of hundreds of Chinese-produced replicas of Mr. Nobody in PEM's Asian Export galleries. Climbing up the walls of the Mellon Staircase and along the floor of the Export Silver Galleries, Lin - who is internationally recognized for his oversized paintings of ornamental design - creates a sprawling mural of original armorial and heraldic motifs that will be echoed in a pair of specially commissioned Bernardaud vases.

    • November 12, 2011 to November 26, 2012
      Maritime Art, Cotting Gallery
Boasting 400,000 objects and an acquisition program over two centuries old, PEM's Phillips Library is one of the largest, oldest and most significant museum libraries in the world. Through over 30 exquisitely rare and storied objects from the library's holdings, this exhibition presents works including: a visually stunning leaf from the Gutenberg Bible, an elaborately detailed sketchbook from the Civil War, 19th-century Japanese teahouse pop-ups, the earliest example of paper currency in the Western world, and a signed first edition of The Scarlet Letter. Equal parts aesthetically and intellectually engaging, the works on view offer a glimpse into historical documents that were acquired for their power to both delight the eye and change the world. 978-745-9500 / www.pem.org

    • February 11, 2012 to May 13, 2012
      Special Exhibition Galleries
Surreal, funny and provocative, Jerry Uelsmann's photographs are icons of American photo history. His most famous technique -- seamlessly fabricating photographs from unrelated negatives to create imaginary scenes -- cemented his standing as a leading light of non-literal photography. The exhibition combines Uelsmann's most celebrated works with many never-before-seen pieces for his first retrospective in 40 years.

    • October 2, 2010 to October 1, 2012 Maritime Art, Mifflin Gallery.
Delve into the world of maritime manuscripts from PEM's renowned Phillips Library collection. Explore the logbooks of 18th-century sea captains as they voyaged around the globe recording extraordinary details of their adventures. Also featured are journals, orders books, letters and commonplace books ― all filled with carefully handwritten accounts. Collectively, these documents offer tantalizing insight into the daily trials and triumphs of maritime history and relate to Charles Sandison's FreePort [No. 001] project in East India Marine Hall.

    • April 10, 2010 to June 16, 2012.
This exhibition presents a dramatic selection of ritual bronzes spanning the last millennium featuring depictions of deified heroes, pastoral gods and goddesses, and totemic animal spirits. These bronzes were principally made for Hindu ritual practice in the west and southwest regions of India and are the best examples of local and vernacular artistry.
